The anatomy of the integumentary system include skin, nails, and hair. The skin has three main layers as shown in the figure to the left. They are in order as follows the outer layer or the Epidermis. The inner layer, or the Dermis, and the lowest layer, the Hypodermis are known as the fatty tissue. The Epidermis has many layers that contain four types of cells. Keratiocytes, melanocytes, merkel's cells and langerhan's cells make up the Epidermis. You can find out more about these cells in the physiology page. There are three types of veins located in the skin. The veins found right near the surface of the skin are called superficial veins and the veins found inside muscles in the arms and legs are called deep veins. Veins carry blood and oxygen throughout the body. This is how blood and oxygen are past to the the near surface of the skin through superficial veins. There are also varicose veins, twisted swollen veins found near the surface of the skin. Weak or defecrive veins that allow blood to flow backward within the skin most commonly found in women but also found in men.
